Manchester United news: Marcos Rojo reveals why he and Angel Di Maria were both fined by the club

The summer of 2014 was an exciting one for Manchester United fans, as their club splashed the cash to sign some true superstar players in a bid to get back to winning ways following the infamous David Moyes season.

Luke Shaw arrived at Old Trafford in a deal which made him, at the time, the most expensive teenager in world football, while Daley Blind and Ander Herrera also penned permanent deals with the Red Devils.

None of these signings were as heralded as the arrival of Angel Di Maria, however, who rocked up to Old Trafford in a deal worth almost £60million.

Di Maria was coming off a season in which he was a key player for the Real Madrid side who won the European Cup, and he had also starred at the World Cup for losing finalists Argentina.

His time in England was a complete disaster, however.

He spent just one season with United before being shipped off to Paris Saint-Germain, scoring only four goals for the Red Devils in all competitions and going down in history as one of the Premier League’s biggest flops.

His compatriot, Marcos Rojo, has lasted much longer at Old Trafford having penned a deal to join United five days before Di Maria.

Another star of the then recent 2014 World Cup, Rojo did impress for United in his early seasons, but his influence has waned over time and he appeared only six times in 2018/19.

He appears to have adapted to England much better than Di Maria ever did, though he recently revealed the pair did not exactly try hard in their early time with Man United.

Speaking to ESPN Argentina, Rojo discussed his early time at Old Trafford and revealed why he and Di Maria were punished by the Red Devils.

“The first year cost me through adaptation because I came from Portugal and had sun all day, there was more like Argentina,” said the defender.

“It cost me because of the rain, the language, the sun never came out, but now it’s been five years and I’m comfortable.

“We went to English classes with Angel Di Maria and we killed each other with laughter.

“Afterwards we did not go to those classes anymore and they started fining us because they were already paying.”

Despite Di Maria quitting United after just a single season, Rojo remains on the club’s books and only last year signed a contract extension. If he sees out the final years of his latest deal, Rojo will, somehow, still be a Manchester United player all the way up to June 2021.
