Hamilton foiled again in opener

MELBOURNE ̢ۢ Lewis Hamilton experienced frustration for a third successive year at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix after a poor start and an early pit stop condemned the five-time world champion to another runner-up finish yesterday.
The Briton claimed a record-extending eighth pole position at Albert Park on Saturday, but ended a distant second behind his resurgent Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, who got the jump on him at the start and burned away.
He was called in to pit early to follow Sebastian Vettel's lead after the Ferrari driver changed to medium compound tyres.
However, Hamilton was overheard on the team radio complaining his tyres would not last, before battling handling issues late on.
On the other hand, Bottas stayed out on soft tyres, a decision that contributed to his dominant 20-second victory, which the Finn declared was definitely his "best race ever".
"In the beginning, it was all about managing the race and building the gap," the Finn said. "I knew I could do it, I've done it before, it was about being at my best level."
Mercedes later issued an official statement saying they had discovered damage to the floor of Hamilton's car and there was a "chunk missing".

Given the circumstances, the 34-year-old felt he "did a relatively decent job", saying: "Obviously, the strategy was not ideal in the scenario that I had. Just obviously the start, I lost out quite a lot.
"It was a good weekend for the team. Valtteri drove an incredible race today so he deserved it. I've just got work on my starts more."
Sky Sports' Formula One commentator Paul di Resta questioned the decision to have him pit early, claiming he could not recall the last time "Hamilton was beaten fair and square like this".
But Mercedes boss Toto Wolff defended the call as the team "needed to cover that undercut (by Vettel)".
He said: "I don't think it was a mistake because we could have ended up behind by not doing that. I don't know why they pitted so early. That put us under pressure."
The Silver Arrows were, however, still delighted their raw pace was more than enough to put Ferrari and their rivals out of the equation.
Expressing his surprise that the Italian team "didn't have any pace at all", Wolff added: "Maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle."
While Mercedes welcomed the one-two finish despite Hamilton's teething problems, Ferrari left Melbourne with some serious questions to answer.
It was a sobering day for the Scuderia as Vettel and new teammate Charles Leclerc were reduced to fighting each other for a minor position, with early warning signs that all was not well coming to a head.
Although the German took umbrage at the decision to make him pit early as he lost pace late on, he admitted the strategy could not explain why the car, which had been the quickest in winter testing in Barcelona, was sluggish at corners and had handled so poorly.
Vettel said: "By the looks of it, of course we did (the change too soon) because I was struggling, so we need to have a good look.
"But even ignoring the lap that we pitted, it looked like other people had way less problems so I'm not quite sure what the issue was."

Manchester derby: Man United fan tells talkSPORT he wants Man City to win and ‘wouldn’t care if it was 8-0’, just to stop Liverpool winning title

Manchester United fans are divided over who to back in Wednesday’s Manchester derby, with one supporter telling talkSPORT he wants Man City to win and ‘doesn’t care if it’s 8-0’!

The Old Trafford faithful have been faced with the ultimate of dilemmas ahead of the clash – a win over City would boost their top-four hopes and claim the local bragging rights, but could also hand the Premier League title to old enemies Liverpool.

Many would argue United’s rivalry with the Merseysiders is greater than their rivalry against noisy neighbours City, and a big number of Red Devils supporters would stop at nothing to prevent Liverpool from getting their hands on a 19th league title.

Man United fans delighted in their dominance of the Premier League over the best part of the last three decades … but no longer

Man United fans delighted in their dominance of the Premier League over the best part of the last three decades … but no longer

But not all agree, it seems, as Alan Brazil and David Seaman found out when they invited United fans to call into Wednesday̢۪s Sports Breakfast to state who they are backing.

United fan ‘Dibbsy’ had one of the more extreme views, admitting he’d be happy if his beloved team got absolutely tanked by City as long as it thwarted Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.

But that didn’t impress some of his fellow supporters…

The fan of over 50 years said: â€Å“I’ve been supporting Manchester United since the ’57 cup final against Aston Villa, and as far as I’m concerned I want Manchester City tonight to stop Liverpool.

â€Å“If they beat us 8-0, I don’t care.

â€Å“If Liverpool win the Premier League we’ll never hear the flaming end of it, and that’s something I don’t want to hear.”

Jason, a fellow United follower, also admitted he will be backing his blue rivals out of his ‘bitterness’ towards old foes Liverpool.

â€Å“I’m a Man United fan but, I hate saying it, I’ll be cheering on Man City tonight,” he said.

â€Å“It comes from my childhood, I went to school with a load of Liverpool fans in the 80s when they were the dominant force, so I just don’t want them winning the Premier League. It’s just bitterness, really.”

Even some of the most passionate United fans want their side to lose against Man City

But, one supporter was absolutely blowing his top when he called into the show later on Wednesday morning, saying it’s ‘embarrassing’ any United fan would back City to win the derby.

â€Å“Some of the United fans this morning have just riled me,” Pete fumed. â€Å“How could you go to a derby and want to lose because Liverpool might win the league?

â€Å“That caller who said, ‘I don’t care if we lose 8-0’, that’s embarrassing! It’s embarrassing that other United fans are saying we should lose against Man City.

â€Å“Liverpool are not our biggest rivals, City are out biggest rivals!”

Jonathan and Ron also agreed that no ‘true’ Manchester United supporter would want their team to lose any game, regardless of what the result might mean for other clubs.

â€Å“We hate Liverpool and they hate us,” Jonathan told Alan Brazil and David Seaman.

â€Å“The last thing we want is for Liverpool to win the league, but when that game starts I never want to see my team lose. I’m a true red and I never want to see United lose.”

Ron added: â€Å“These other fans, they’re mad.

â€Å“I don’t care about Liverpool and I don’t care about City, I’m a United fan and any true United fan wants our team to win every game we play, regardless of what it means for other teams.

â€Å“I’m not bothered about Liverpool – they’re never been as big as United and they’ve never going to be as big as United.”

Tottenham legends vs Inter Milan: Nicola Berti on the time Christian Gross caught him at a party he shouldn’t have been at

Tottenham legends vs Inter Milan: Nicola Berti on the time Christian Gross caught him at a party he shouldn’t have been at

Nicola Berti only played 21 Premier League games for Tottenham, but fans still sing his name.

Arriving from Inter in January 1998 on a six-month contract, he helped Spurs avoid relegation contributing three goals and as many assists.

Now, the man who had a playboy reputation in his playing career and enjoys cult status in north London, will play in the second test event at Tottenham̢۪s redeveloped White Hart Lane when Spurs legends play a team of Inter legends.

Hey Gorgeous!

Berti enjoys cult status among the Spurs faithful, who still sing this song

“My name is Nicola Berti

I̢۪m aged around 30

I come from a team in Milan – INTER!

When I walk down the street

All the people I meet

They say, Hey! Gorgeous! Whats your name?”

Recalling the differences in pre-match preparations between Serie A and the Premier League when he played, Berti explained his love of the good life followed him.

â€Å“We didn’t have an overnight stay before games like in Italy so I was in an Italian restaurant for a party one Friday night,” he recalled to the Independent in 2018.

Berti played 311 times for Inter and scored 41 goals between 1988 and 1998

2

Berti played 311 times for Inter and scored 41 goals between 1988 and 1998

â€Å“Out of the blue [Tottenham manager] Christian Gross appeared and he asked me: ‘What the hell are you doing here?’ I told him: ‘It’s my girlfriend’s birthday.’ It was the very first thing that came into my head. â€Å“Where is she?” he asked, so I just grabbed the nearest girl and presented her as my girlfriend.”

Tottenham managed to avoid relegation in 1998 thanks in part to Berti and the goals of Jurgen Klinsmann, who was at White Hart Lane for his second spell where he scored nine goals in 15 league matches.

And Klinsmann, who played with Berti at Inter and who persuaded the Italian to move to London, will join Berti at Spurs̢۪ new ground to play minutes for both sides.

He was 31 when he joined Spurs and operated in the Pirlo role, playing 21 Premier League games, scoring three and creating three goals

2

On the pitch, Berti remembers the Premier League, especially English players, were pretty ill-disciplined place when it came to tactics.

At 31, he arrived having had three serious injuries, but was still comfortable in the deep lying midfield role.

â€Å“At that time in England it wasn’t like now, there were fewer foreign owners, fewer foreign players so although the pace on the pitch was very high, it was completely disorganised and someone like me could play well, despite being at only 70 per cent of my capacity.”

‘Manchester United’s 1999 treble-winners were BETTER than Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City’, says Sam Allardyce on talkSPORT

Sam Allardyce believes Premier League champions Manchester City are still not as good a team as Manchester United’s treble-winning side under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Pep Guardiola’s City side have broken Premier League records and set a new benchmark for success in the English top flight.

Manchester City team have smashed Premier League records under Pep Guardiola, recording new highs in points and goals scored in a season

They have recorded the two highest ever finishes in their last two campaigns, winning the title twice on the bounce with a haul of 100 points and 98 points.

Their fight with Liverpool this season, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds finishing just one point behind as runners-up, has been hailed as the best title race in the Premier League era and perhaps the best in English football history.

But while it has been a battle for the ages, it is not rare for the title race to go right to the wire. In fact, this is the ninth time the title has been decided on the final day.

talkSPORT host Alan Brazil agrees with the widespread claim that this City team are the best we have ever seen in the English game.

But, sitting opposite Alan on Tuesday’s Sports Breakfast, Allardyce said: “I’m not so sure they beat Fergie yet.

“Fergie won the Premier League three times on the trot [he actually did this twice: 1998-2001 and 2006-2009] and won the treble.

“If you talk about the fact Man City are very close, I’d agree with that, but I don’t think they’re quite Manchester United.

“You forget how great they were in the past, how big the challenges were at the time and how good their players were.

“And I’m not so sure the lower end of the Premier League is quite as good as they used to be in the early 2000s. Personally, I think the teams were a lot stronger in the lower half of the Premier League than they are now.”

Football: Tottenham's Kane has 'significant' ankle ligament damage

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur's England striker Harry Kane suffered serious ankle ligament damage in Tuesday's 1-0 Champions League victory over Manchester City, the Premier League club said on Thursday (April 11).
Kane rolled his left ankle in the second half of the quarter-final first leg after a hefty tackle on City defender Fabian Delph and left the field immediately.
Spurs gave no timeframe for when Kane might be fit again.
"Following assessment over the past two days, we can confirm that Harry Kane has sustained a significant lateral ligament injury to his left ankle following a challenge in our Champions League quarter-final, first leg win against Manchester City," Spurs said on their website.
"Investigations are ongoing and he will continue to be assessed by our medical staff over the coming week."
The England captain, who has scored 24 goals in all competitions this season, left the club's new stadium on crutches with a protective boot on his foot.
On Wednesday, 25-year-old Kane had tweeted: "Gutted to go off injured but every setback is a chance to come back stronger than ever. Big finish from the boys to go on and win!"

Spurs also said England midfielder Dele Alli had fractured his left hand in Tuesday's game and was being assessed to see if he can play against relegated Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
Fourth-placed Tottenham are battling for a top-four finish to claim a Champions League spot for next season. They trail third-placed Chelsea by two points, with a game in hand, and lead fellow London rivals Arsenal by one point.

Eden Hazard: Chelsea superstar could be on his way to Real Madrid, but what is his legacy at Stamford Bridge?

Eden Hazard: Chelsea superstar could be on his way to Real Madrid, but what is his legacy at Stamford Bridge?

Chelsea star Eden Hazard underlined his brilliance against West Ham on Monday night when he netted both goals in a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

Those goals sent the Blues back into the Champions League places and the opener from the Belgian was one of his, and the Premier League’s, best ever individual efforts.

The future of Hazard remains unclear however, with Real Madrid lurking in the shadows hoping to convince the player he is better of playing for them under the guidance of his hero, Zinedine Zidane.

So, if Hazard does leave in the summer, what will his legacy have been at Chelsea after seven years with the club?

In his post match interview, Hazard stood with his arms folded, shrugged his shoulders in an unassuming manner and answered each question with nonchalant honesty. While the standard monologue is littered with cliches and repetitive phrases from a sniffling, sweaty footballer, still trying to get their breath back, the Belgian is rarely evasive, the complete opposite to how he is on the pitch.

No doubt West Ham would have seen it before, training probably consisted of drills specifically designed to halt Hazard, Mark Noble issuing a last-minute warning to his defence to stay tight, don’t give him any space.

West Ham were powerless to stop Hazard

But whether they had watched him, prepared for him, spoke about him, there is very little any team can do to thwart Hazard when he is in the mood and Monday night was the perfect example. Those short, quick strides, low centre of gravity, a forward thrust so hard to interrupt, finished with a goal.

And for much of his Chelsea career, Hazard has been in the mood, but when he is not, the inconsistency is prolonged, he once went 11 months without a Premier League goal between 2015 and 2016, the only season he failed to reach double figures in all competitions.

For much of his time at Stamford Bridge, Hazard has frequently been compared to two greats of the modern generation; Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, both have been at the top of their game for well over a decade and both are capable of swinging the pendulum back in the favour of their side, as they have shown on numerous occasions.

Hazard had a difficult 2015/16 season

Hazard had a difficult 2015/16 season

So to can Hazard, of course there can be no doubting that, his brilliance has helped win two league titles and other domestic honours, since he joined the club in 2012, along with a number of personal accolades – he was Player of the Year in 2015 and finished in the top 10 twice for the Ballon d’Or.

Complex relationships with Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte did not get in the way of his significant contribution to Chelsea’s league triumphs, but in both the seasons that followed, the question, perhaps unfairly asked of their talisman is could he have done more?

This season, Hazard continues to set the standards at both Chelsea and the Premier League, his goal involvement of 28 is more than any other player in the top-flight, while his 19 goals have matched his previous personal best. Hazard has never had much trouble expressing himself, but this campaign has perhaps been his most consistent, now 28, he is in the midst of his peak years.

Such is his importance, that when has plays poorly, his team-mates are likely to do the same.

â€Å“It will be as big a loss to a team as Thierry Henry was when he left to go to Barcelona,” Tony Cascarino told talkSPORT.

â€Å“He [Hazard] is up there with the very best. If he gets you from a standing start and he stops, you’re in trouble. There aren’t many players I can say that about.”

The courting from Real Madrid has hardly been subtle, they have never made it a secret when a player takes their interest and Hazard, to his credit, has not lost focus, West Ham fans chanted ‘he’s off to Madrid’ but Hazard dismissed the playful antagonism with a respectful laugh and reiterated his desire to remain with Chelsea.

Deep down, however, the prevailing feeling is that Hazard will follow his heart and move to Spain and Real in the summer, you sense he has gone as far as he can. It is no secret he admires Zidane and his desire to succeed in the Champions League and win a Ballon d’Or are also factors.

Chelsea and the Premier League will both miss Hazard if he goes

Chelsea and the Premier League will both miss Hazard if he goes

While his legacy at Chelsea was not initially obvious, up against the likes of Frank Lampard or Didier Drogba, Hazard has shown he is worthy of being considered a club legend, there is even debate as to whether he could be the club’s best ever player.

However he is remembered, should he decide to head off for pastures new, Chelsea and the Premier League will certainly be a poorer place without Hazard.
