Southend task former Tottenham and QPR assistant Kevin Bond with saving League One status

Southend have appointed Kevin Bond as their manager on a contract until the end of the season.

Bond succeeds Chris Powell, who was axed last week after a run of 11 matches without a win left the Shrimpers just above the League One relegation zone.

The 59-year-old previously worked alongside Redknapp at four different clubs

Ricky Duncan, the club’s academy manager, and under-23s manager Kevin Maher took charge for Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to Shrewsbury, but Bond has now been handed the reins.

The 61-year-old has vast experience in the game as an assistant alongside Harry Redknapp at Birmingham, Portsmouth, Tottenham and QPR while he has managed Bournemouth and Hong Kong Pegasus.
