Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed he ruled himself out for several weeks by celebrating his famous stoppage-time winner against Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final.
The Manchester United manager returns to the scene of that historic victory tonight when the Red Devils try to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Barcelona at the Camp Nou in their quarter-final.

And Solskjaer will be hoping for a miracle similar to the club’s fairytale twenty years ago, which helped United secure the treble.
With Sir Alex Ferguson’s men trailing 1-0 after 90 minutes, they completed a dramatic turnaround in stoppage time thanks to goals from Teddy Sheringham and super-sub Solskjaer.
“I was quite focused on what was going to come,” Solskjaer told ESPN. “My feeling was that I had 30 minutes in a Champions League final and I had to make the most of it.

“I felt great and I was just looking forward to doing something in extra-time. But I went and ruined it.”
The lasting memory of that night for many United fans is Solskjaer’s power slide, but the 46-year-old admits it didn’t exactly go to plan.
There have been long-standing rumours the celebration was linked to the knee injury that ended his playing career in 2007, and while he dismissed that particular myth, he revealed that damage was indeed done.

“I did get injured and I did tweak my medial ligament,” he said.
“[Retirement] was nothing to do with my injury but I missed two or three weeks and a couple of internationals for Norway but it was worth it. The celebration was worth it.
“I’ve seen [the goal] so many times. I cannot remember exactly what I felt because I was so focused on my job. I think it was bigger for everyone else around. I just did my job as a striker, something I’d done so many times before.
“It was just being in the right position at the right time.”
