Ex-Liverpool boss Graeme Souness launches scathing rant on people ‘talking bull about tactics and formations’

Former Liverpool boss Graeme Souness is ‘fed up of listening to people talk bull about tactics and formations’ in modern day football.

The 65-year-old was working as a pundit on Virgin Media Sport as Ajax beat Tottenham 1-0 in their Champions League semi-final first leg tie on Tuesday.

And Souness, who has not managed a club since being sacked by Newcastle in 2006, threw his pen across the table as he urged teams to get back to basics before delving into tactics.

He said: “Let me tell you, you can watch any football programme and they’ll talk about systems and tactics and formations, substitutions, preparation. It’s quite simply a game of football.

“If you first get right that you’re first to the ball, you’re on the front foot, and you’re going forward, you’re playing on the front foot and you’re attacking, and tactics then after that might come into play.

“If the tactics come first, ‘we’re going to go out, we’re going to have this system, we’re going to do this tactically’, but you’re second to the ball, your tactics go out the window.

“You might as well [acts out washing his hands]. I’m fed up of listening to people talk bull about tactics and formations and too much football science.

Manchester United will pay a goodwill gesture of £1million to Molde following the appointment Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their permanent manager.

The Norwegian was formally announced as the club’s boss on a three-year contract, having successfully taken charge on an interim basis when he replaced the sacked Jose Mourinho back in December.

He won his first eight matches in charge and has claimed a total of 14 victories and two draws in just 19 games.

Molde received half of the payment in December when Solskjaer took over and his former club will now receive the second half of their money.

Solskjaer is keen to maintain a strong relationship between the clubs, having joined from Molde for just £1.5m in 1996, while going on to manage his former side in two separate spells.

First in 2011 for two years and then again in 2015, having spent nine months in the Premier League with Cardiff.

“From the first day I arrived, I felt at home at this special club,” he said.

“It was an honour to be a Manchester United player, and then to start my coaching career here.

“The last few months have been a fantastic experience and I want to thank all of the coaches, players and staff for the work we’ve done so far.

His first match in charge since the announcement will be at home to Watford on Saturday.

After naming ole Gunnar Solskjaer their permanent manager, Manchester United is set to pay Molde sum of one million euros as a goodwill gesture. Molde, in fact, received the first half of the payment upon Solskjaer appointment as caretaker manager. Molde is to receive the second part of the payment in the coming weeks.

Gareth Southgate underlines need for education after England players suffer racial abuse in Montenegro

Gareth Southgate has called for education in the fight against racism after the disgraceful abuse suffered by England’s players in Montenegro.

The Three Lions sealed an impressive 5-1 victory to take control of their Euro 2020 qualifying group, but the football became a mere side note after Danny Rose and Callum Hudson-Odoi were subjected to monkey chants from the home supporters.

Raheem Sterling celebrated the fifth goal by pulling his ears as a sign of defiance to what he later called ‘racists’ on social media.

And speaking after the game, Southgate argued that society must get to the root of the issue instead of handing out ‘worthless’ sanctions.

“I don’t think I need to comment on what was said,” England boss Southgate said. “It was clear to everybody that there were comments made.

“Reflecting on sanctions, sanctions are only of any use if they lead to education.

“Sanctions are worthless if there is nothing alongside that to help educate people.

“My kids don’t think for one minute about where people are born, what language they speak, what colour they are.

Southgate underlined the need for education

“There’s an innocence about young people that is only influenced by older people. So, we have to make sure that the education is right for everybody.

“In our country, (it’s) the same. I’ve said this before, I’m not sitting here just criticising what’s happened tonight because in our country we have the same issue. We’re not free of it.

“You can sanction clubs (or countries), but frankly that’s not going to stop one or two people who are of a mindset from doing what they want to do.

“So, we have to make sure that we educate young people because we have a better chance with young people and then we’ve got to lead that as far and as wide as we possibly can.”

UEFA are set to investigate and their regulations state that if supporters engage in racist behaviour then ‘the member association or club responsible is punished with a minimum of a partial stadium closure’.

It was a sad end to an impressive night for England, who showed resolve and skill as they scored five goals or more in back-to-back matches for the first time since 1984.

Ross Barkley’s brace was complemented by goals from Michael Keane, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling as the Three Lions overcame the hosts’ early opener.

Chelsea 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt (2-2 on aggregate): Blues to face Arsenal in Europa League final after nerve-wracking penalty shootout triumph

Chelsea will meet Arsenal in an all-Premier League Europa League final with Eden Hazard firing a decisive penalty in what would be his last ever kick at Stamford Bridge.

The Belgian tucked the spot-kick in the net as the Blues edged out Eintracht Frankfurt 4-3 in the tense shootout following a 1-1 draw in normal and extra-time.

Hazard struck home the winning penalty in what could be his final match at Stamford Bridge as a Chelsea player

Kepa Arrizabalaga produced two fine saves to spare Cesar Azpilicueta’s blushes, as the Blues captain missed his own spot-kick.

Kepa saved Martin Hinteregger’s penalty with his knees before palming away a good effort from Gonzalo Pacienca as the Blues set up a showdown with London rivals Arsenal in Baku, Azerbaijan, on May 29.

Should Hazard’s reported big-money transfer to Real Madrid materialise this summer, the 28-year-old will have capped his Stamford Bridge tenure in the most dramatic of fashions.

Spanish stopper Kepa joined Hazard in the hero’s corner, and that after proving the villain of Chelsea’s shoot-out loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final back in February.

Kepa celebrates the semi-final win with Cesar Azpilicueta

From refusing to be replaced that day as Chelsea lost 4-3 to City on spot-kicks, now Kepa is the toast of west London following two fine penalty saves.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s fine goal had initially put Chelsea in control, only for Luka Jovic to tuck away his 10th goal of the Europa League campaign.

Hazard conjured up an impetuous assist for Loftus-Cheek’s 10th goal of the season, but Eintracht forced the game into extra time – with the scores 1-1 on the night, 2-2 on aggregate and level on away goals.

A microcosm of Chelsea’s season and Maurizio Sarri’s tetchy Stamford Bridge reign in a single contest, the Blues bossed the first half only to tumble from that perch after the break.

As Sarri’s regimented game plan stuttered and his disorganised players stumbled the taskmaster Italian stalked the touchline in frustration, ignoring the fourth official’s constant demands to stay inside his technical area.

Sarri snubbed Gary Cahill for perhaps the final time, leaving the former England defender on the bench when Andreas Christensen hobbled out injured.

Where Sarri could have replaced Christensen directly with the ever-reliable Cahill, instead he turned to full-back Davide Zappacosta.

That meant a full defensive reshuffle, with Azpilicueta moving into central defence.

The already frustrated home fans had no patience left then when Sarri withdrew clear man of the match Loftus-Cheek for Ross Barkley with extra time looming.

The deafening boos were just the latest instalment of the Chelsea fans voicing their catalogue of frustrations with the former Napoli manager.

Chelsea’s present talisman fed a potential future great as the Blues took control midway through the first half. Hazard’s angled pass on the spin bisected Eintracht’s defence, but Loftus-Cheek’s run and finish matched the Belgian’s majesty.

Loftus-Cheek gave Chelsea the lead following great work by Hazard

Frankfurt dangerman Jovic headed straight at Kepa early on, but Chelsea dominated the opening half and fully merited Loftus-Cheek’s eye-catching goal.

The Blues were denied a penalty when Danny Da Costa barged over Loftus-Cheek after Olivier Giroud had missed Willian’s near-post cross.

Chelsea paid for a tentative second-half start when Jovic strolled through a poorly aligned home defensive line to equalise and put the tie right back in the balance.

The visitors had hardly stopped appealing for a penalty handball when Jovic cantered clear, with David Luiz stranded too high out of the line and Emerson playing him on.

The arch Serbian finisher made no mistake with the easy chance, leaving a stunned Chelsea back to square one.

Jovic’s smart finish levelled up the tie

6

Every time Chelsea wasted a half-chance or passed away possession, Frankfurt grew in stature and confidence.

Christensen hobbled out for Zappacosta, and then Azpilicueta was merely booked for that rash scything challenge.

The Blues’ panic had Sarri almost sent to the stands, with the fourth official nearly losing patience with the Chelsea manager’s touchline wandering.

And then the under-fire Stamford Bridge chief withdrew Loftus-Cheek, the star of the show.

Azpilicueta again swerved dismissal despite a cynical handball, with the officials simply awarding a free-kick.

Hazard and replacement Gonzalo Higuain botched a big chance on a counter-attack to launch the added 30 minutes.

Then Sebastien Haller bungled a gilt-edged Eintracht opportunity, mishitting his shot to allow Luiz a full-stretch clearance off the line.

Zappacosta headed off the line from Haller to close the first period of extra time.

Azpilicueta thought he had won it when bundling the ball across the line, only for the goal to be chalked off for a foul on Eintracht keeper Kevin Trapp.

When the game slipped into the lottery of penalties, however, Hazard saved Chelsea once again.
