Alfredo Morelos: Rangers star apologises to fans, team-mates and coaching staff after latest red card against Celtic

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has issued an apology to fans, team-mates and coaching staff following his fifth dismissal of the season in Sunday’s dramatic Old Firm derby.

The Colombian was sent off for an off-the-ball elbow on Celtic skipper Scott Brown in the Gers’ 2-1 defeat.

His manager, Steven Gerrard, said after the game that he could no longer defend Morelos after another costly incident.

Morelos said in a post on his Twitter account: “Good afternoon, I would like to offer an apology to all the fans, my team-mates and the coaching staff for what happened in yesterday’s match.

“I promise to do everything in my power to ensure that nothing like that happens again & to give the club and the fans my all. Thanks for the support and affection you’ve always given me.”

Gerrard, who confirmed defender Andy Halliday had been shown a second yellow card in an unsavoury post-match melee between the players on the pitch, gave a simple reply when asked if he could still defend Morelos.

“No. Not anymore,” he said.

Reds must play own game: Klopp

Reds must play own game: Klopp

LONDON ̢ۢ Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists that he is focusing solely on his team and nobody else.
The Reds lead the English Premier League by a point from Manchester City and will get an opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table today when they travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
But the German told a pre-match conference: "We have to be consistent. So many things can happen, why should we think about one opponent like we are the only ones who can stop City?
"It's not like that. Only City can stop City, to be honest. We have to play our own game and try to get as many points as possible, that's all."
The Reds are the only unbeaten side left in the league this season and are flying high on 45 points, one more than champions City, who host Crystal Palace tomorrow.
Wolves are in a good run of form themselves, winning three straight following two defeats and are seventh in the standings on 25 points.
"It's an outstanding project, what they did last year in the Championship," Klopp added of today's opponents, referring to their 99-point title-winning campaign.
"Then they brought in a lot of players again and needed a bit of time, now they're really strong. We have to go there and be at our best."
One Liverpool player who is arguably at his best at the moment is forward Xherdan Shaqiri, who scored two goals in the 3-1 win over Manchester United last weekend.
The Swiss was fortunate to get a move to Anfield in July, having been part of a relegated Stoke side, and it is only now that he is starting to suggest he can be a key figure.
There were questions over whether he had the necessary work ethic for the demanding Klopp.
Answering those questions has taken time, but he is getting there, as the Liverpool boss himself has acknowledged.
"Shaq needs time, it's normal," Klopp said. "He knows that he has so much potential still to improve. But of course he's the guy for decisive moments, and we have to make sure that it stays like this."
Shaqiri, 27, once stated in an interview that he felt his new club "can win everything in the world".
If that statement seemed hubristic, it was at least made from a position of knowledge as to what it takes to be successful - he was part of the Bayern Munich squad that won back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2013 and 2014.
That winning nous may prove useful in a Liverpool squad full of talent but short on experience when it comes to winning league titles.
In addition to his goal-scoring threat, he also possesses an ability to unlock defences with short and long-range passing and an appreciation of how to find and exploit space. Those skills, in addition to his ability as a free-kick taker, are likely to be vital in tight games.
Klopp has hinted that there will be opportunities for him across the attacking line, even if it comes at the expense of one of the team's menacing trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
"He is someone who makes a big difference because he can fit in so many positions in our system," the manager said.
Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren believes his team can match Arsenal's 2003-04 "Invincibles" by going the whole season unbeaten and lifting the title.
"Arsenal did it before so why not?" he said.

Montengero vs England: Gareth Southgate says he has ‘no hesitation’ playing Jadon Sancho AND Callum Hudson-Odoi in Euro 2020 qualifier

Gareth Southgate says he would play youngsters Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi without any hesitation in their Euro 2020 qualifier at Montenegro.

The Three Lions take on the former Yugoslav nation on Monday night – a game you can listen to live on talkSPORT – following their rampant 5-0 victory over the Czech Republic on Friday.

Sancho and Hudson-Odoi both featured in the win at Wembley

Sancho acquitted himself well on his first competitive start for England, while Hudson-Odoi had a few good moments on his senior debut after coming on as a substitute in the match at Wembley.

However, the game in Podgorica is expected to be a tougher test, with England failing to win in two visits to Montenegro.

Southgate may call on more experienced heads for the game, but the England boss insisted that these sorts of contests are important for the education of the pair.

Speaking to the press before the game, Southgate said on whether he would play Sancho, who turns 19 on Monday and Hudson-Odoi, 18: â€Å“No hesitation.

Southgate spoke to the media ahead of Monday’s game

2

Southgate spoke to the media ahead of Monday’s game

“This is part of their education and to be a top team you have to adapt to every environment you go into.

â€Å“Friday at Wembley is a different sort of experience to going away from home in a qualifier which is always difficult wherever I’ve travelled.

â€Å“The only way they can learn and improve is to go through these experiences.

But whoever gets the nod, Southgate insisted that his players will be ready for the potentially hostile environment.

He added:  â€Å“We’re guests here so we’ll be very respectful about how we speak about the opposition.

â€Å“Our players always have to be prepared for hostile environments, whether their playing in England for their clubs or travelling around the world.

â€Å“We always prepare the players for everything but the most important thing is to prepare tactically for the game and make sure that our performance levels are high.”

â€Å“We have to make sure that we are getting closer and moving that way up the table and not looking over the shoulders because there are big clubs, good clubs wanting to chase that top six.”

So, who are the best players outside of the top six? talkSPORT take a look…

Goalkeeper – Lukasz Fabianski (West Ham)

Lukasz Fabianski has been a revelation at the London Stadium

Fabianski has been an ever-present in Manuel Pellegrini̢۪s side since signing from Swansea last summer. The 34-year-old has been the busiest goalkeeper in the Premier League this season, making 140 saves. He has proven himself as a reliable top-flight No.1 since leaving Arsenal in 2014.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is becoming a Premier League star

Wan-Bissaka, who won Crystal Palace̢۪s Player of the Year award, has been one of the most consistent defenders in the Premier League this season.

Not many people would have blamed him for counting himself unlucky after being left out of Gareth Southgate̢۪s England squad in March.

His form has alerted the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City, however, the 21-year-old recently revealed he will be a Crystal Palace player next term.

Centre-back – Harry Maguire (Leicester)

Harry Maguire has had another fine season for Leicester

Maguire was one of former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho̢۪s transfer targets last summer.

The towering defender was able to take his 2018 World Cup form with England into this season – and has been a regular fixture at the back for Leicester. Maguire will be crucial to the Foxes’ chances of mounting a top-six push next season.

Centre-back – Conor Coady (Wolves)

The former Liverpool trainee has been one of Wolves̢۪ standout players in their first season back in the Premier League.

Playing every single minute of the Premier League season so far, Coady has helped them to an impressive seventh-placed finish.

The club captain will be playing Europa League football next season if Manchester City beat Watford in this month̢۪s FA Cup final. Surely an England call-up is on the horizon?

Left-back – Lucas Digne (Everton)

Digne has enjoyed a successful debut season in the Premier League, chipping in with four goals and assists each.

He has been part of a watertight Everton defence, which has kept eight clean sheets in ten games.

Only Liverpool (20), Manchester City (20) and Chelsea (15) have had more shutouts than Everton (14) this term.

Right-wing – Richarlison (Everton)

Similarly to his team-mate Digne, Richarlison has been one of Everton̢۪s best players this term.

He has scored 14 goals since joining in a £50million deal from Watford last summer. The Brazil international has even been linked with a move to Barcelona following his goalscoring form. The 21-year-old will only get better with years to come.

Central midfield – Abdoulaye Doucoure (Watford)

Watford could find it hard to keep Doucoure this summer, especially after the Paris Saint-Germain target admitted he would leave Vicarage Road if the right club came calling.

He has had yet another fine season in the Premier League and is on course to help Watford finish in the top ten.

Central midfield – James Maddison (Leicester)

James Maddison will only get better with time

Signed for £22.5million from Norwich last year, that transfer fee seems like a bargain now. In his first season in the Premier League, Maddison has been directly involved in 14 goals, scoring and assisting seven each.

He has been deployed slightly deeper in midfield since Brendan Rodgers replaced Claude Puel in March, but has still been able to shine. He has been touted as a replacement for Arsenal̢۪s Aaron Ramsey, who will join Juventus on July 1.

Zaha is having his most lethal top-flight season, netting ten goals for Roy Hodgson̢۪s men.

He has been so crucial to Palace preserving their Premier League status over the past five years. Despite signing a new five-year contract last August, reports claim Arsenal are interested in the winger.

Striker – Raul Jimenez (Wolves)

Wolves paid Benfica £30million to make Jimenez’s loan move permanent last month.

The Mexico international has scored 17 goals and registered seven assists in all competitions. He has arguably been one of the signings of the season. Jimenez has also struck up a deadly strike partnership with Diogo Jota.

Football: AC Milan's Higuain poised for Chelsea move - report

MILAN (AFP) - AC Milan striker Gonzalo Higuain has "agreed terms" and is set for an imminent move to Premier League club Chelsea, Italian sports daily Gazzetta Dello Sport reported on Wednesday (Jan 9).
Higuain joined Milan on a season-long loan from Juventus in July with an option to buy but has struggled to settle at the San Siro, scoring eight goals in all competitions.
And the 31-year-old Argentina international wants to join former Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri at the English club which would take over his 36 million euro (S$55.9 million) buy-out clause.
"Chelsea have an agreement with Higuain to take him immediately," Gazzetta reported.
Higuain had his most successful season under Sarri, breaking the Serie A goalscoring record with 36 goals in the 2015/16 campaign.
He scored 91 goals during his three years at the club before moving to Juventus in 2016 on a 90 million euro deal.
He previously spent six years at Real Madrid before starting his career at River Plate in Argentina.
Higuain had been hampered by a back injury earlier in the season but broke his two-month goal-scoring drought before the winter break.
Milan's sporting director Leonardo however warned on Tuesday he had to get down to work.
"He had a tough moment, he has to put it behind him and get to work," said Leonardo.
"A goal can change things, but if he is to continue here, he needs to take on responsibility." Brazilian Leonardo added: "There's no point following rumours and gossip.
"He is here right now. Seeing as he is here, he needs to get down and actually do something for this team."

Manchester United transfer news: Red Devils officials ‘photographed in talks’ with Mexico midfielder Carlos Rodriguez’s agent

Manchester United officials were spotted talking to Monterrey midfielder Carlos Rodriguez’s agent, reports claim.

According to Mexican outlet Los Pleyers, two individuals from the Premier League side watched Rodriguez in action before holding talks with representatives for the 22-year-old

The alleged United officials were actually pictured chatting to the agent, after being photographed at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer before Monterrey’s 1-0 defeat of Necaxa on Monday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be keen on Rodriguez, who earned his first cap for Mexico back in March, after helping his side win the Central and North American version of the Champions League earlier this year.

United are in desperate need of numbers to bolster their midfield after confirming Ander Herrera will be leaving the club this summer at the expiration of his contract. Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic have also been linked with summer exits from Old Trafford.

That would leave Fred and Scott McTominay as the only recognised midfielders at the Norwegian’s disposal.

Solskjaer has suggested there will be a big clear-out of his playing squad this summer, with big-name players such as Pogba, Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku all potentially facing the axe.

There could be a recall for defender Axel Tuanzebe, who has impressed on loan at Aston Villa, however.
