‘They are nothing special’ – Adrian Durham tears into West Ham United after another abject performance in 2019

Adrian Durham has ripped into West Ham United after yet another abject performance in 2019.

And the Drivetime host criticised Andy Carroll and Jack Wilshere in particular for ‘draining money’ out of the club.

A 2-0 defeat to Chelsea does not tell the whole story as the Hammers were battered at Stamford Bridge in the latest poor performance of the calendar year.

Four defeats at the start of the season were quickly rectified and there was even the distinct possibility of finishing seventh and qualifying for the Europa League.

But with the club now in 11th place and with a trip to Manchester United on Saturday evening, Durham took aim at the East Enders.

He said: “I looked at the West Ham side and I thought ‘that’s not bad’. And yet they played the way they did.

“Which was, and I think I just said there, they’ve been floating around aimlessly doing nothing.

“And that to me, sums up West Ham United. They’re just not very special are they?”

Manuel Pellegrini spent more than £100million in the summer and broke the club’s transfer record twice in order to propel the Hammers to the fabled ‘next level’.

But there is little to suggest they are even remotely close to achieving that as they continue to turn in below-par performances.

Over the years, the club have invested heavily in injury-prone players who have not been worth the gamble.

And it is the current crop which is making Durham question the current mentality in place.

“They look good in mid-table. But points-wise, they’re not that special at all,” he added.

“They are nine points ahead of Southampton, that’s it!

“With the recruitment they had last summer and some of the players they brought in, they should be doing a whole lot better.

“So what’s going to happen at West Ham United; they made the decision to sign Carroll, it’s been a disaster for them.

“And they made the decision to sign Wilshere and that has been a disaster for them.

“Two players on their books, draining money out of the football club and that is affecting the first team.

“Have they got the right manager, have they got the right squad and have they got the strategy at West Ham?”
