Football: Mbappe reaches half century as PSG brush Nimes aside

PARIS (REUTERS) - Kylian Mbappe became the youngest player in 45 years to reach 50 Ligue 1 goals as Paris St Germain beat visiting Nimes 3-0 on Saturday (Feb 23) to stretch their lead at the top to 17 points.
Christopher Nkunku's opener and Mbappe's second half-double maintained PSG's 100 per cent home record in the league this season and lifted them further clear of second-placed Lille who drew with Strasbourg on Friday.
Nkunku put the capital club in front five minutes before the break when he expertly controlled Marco Verratti's ball over the top before producing a composed finish.
Mbappe had two goals ruled out in the first half, one for offside and one for handball, but made amends after the interval as he finished from close range on 69 minutes to mark his half century in the French top flight before finishing off a sweeping counter-attack.
At the age of 20 years, two months and three days, the France striker became the youngest player since Yannick Stopyra in 1982 to reach the 50-goal landmark.
PSG lead the standings on 68 points with 22 wins from 25 games. Nimes are in 11th place with 36 points.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester City: Sergio Aguero’s second half goal sends side back to the top of the Premier League

Burnley 0-1 Manchester City: Sergio Aguero’s second half goal sends side back to the top of the Premier League

Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League with a deserved 1-0 victory at Burnley.

The reigning champions had to wait until midway through the second half before taking the lead and needed the help of goal-line technology.

Sergio Aguero’s shot just crossed the line and was enough to give City the three points.

Leroy Sane returned to the starting line-up and replaced the injured Fernandinho in the only change to the City side that beat Manchester United in midweek.

Burnley, who are now safe from relegation, named an unchanged side after drawing 2-2 at Chelsea on Monday.

Pep Guardiola’s side were dominant in the first half enjoying the majority of possession and attempts but struggled to break down Burnley.

Kompany took a Jack Cork shot flush on the forehead and he also gave away a free-kick which led to Ben Mee volleying over. Ederson also had to react quickly to prevent Chris Wood racing in on goal, although the New Zealand striker was also let down by a poor touch.

It took some time for City to carve out any openings and they were unable to trouble Tom Heaton in the Burnley goal before the break.

Raheem Sterling played Bernardo Silva in on the right but the Portuguese cut inside and failed to get any power in his shot. David Silva also hesitated before having an effort blocked by James Tarkowski and Oleksandr Zinchenko’s follow-up attempt was deflected wide.

Aguero went close with a curling effort from the edge of the area but Heaton appeared to have it covered and Guardiola reacted with frustration when Leroy Sane shot tamely at the keeper.

City started the second period with greater intensity and Aguero forced a good save from Heaton before the visitors had a strong penalty appeal turned down when a David Silva shot struck Barnes on the arm.

Heaton saved well from Bernardo Silva as City applied more pressure and Aguero drove a shot wide.

The breakthrough finally came in scrappy fashion after 63 minutes as Bernardo Silva drove the ball into the box. Aguero initially miskicked but the ball remained at his feet and the Argentinian managed to poke the ball over the line at the second attempt – by a tiny margin according to the technology – before Matt Lowton could clear.

City looked to the referee for another goalline decision when substitute Gabriel Jesus rounded Heaton to bring a diving clearance from Mee, but this time Paul Tierney’s watch did not buzz.

Guardiola’s side did take the sting out of Burnley’s play by retaining possession in the closing minutes but some defending still needed to be done and the final whistle was greeted with huge relief by the visitors.

Liverpool news: Bobby Duncan pays his respects to Manchester City after FA Youth Cup win

His super strike helped Liverpool on their way to FA Youth Cup success, but Bobby Duncan was not about to rub salt into Manchester City’s wounds.

The striker, who is Steven Gerrard’s cousin, moved from City to Liverpool in 2018 and scored to take Thursday’s final into extra-time, with the Reds going on to win 5-3 on penalties.

And afterwards the 17-year-old sent a respectful message to his former club on Twitter.

He wrote: “I just want to pay my respect to Man City Academy and all the staff and players who have been on my journey it was a great game with 2 top teams!”

Duncan scored 66 goals for City in the 2015/16 season and became the first player in any England age group, including the seniors, to score a hat-trick against Brazil in a 4-3 win in November 2016.

Unable to agree a new contract with City, he chose to stay away and spend a year without a club when they activated a year’s scholarship to cover the 2017/18 season.

The teenager then joined boyhood club Liverpool in 2018.

Duncan’s Cup final goal, brought his tally in all competitions this season to 32.

Chelsea had won the FA Youth Cup for the previous five years and this Liverpool win ended a 12-year wait to lift the trophy.

Captain Paul Glatzel, another prolific striker, held his nerve to convert the decisive spot-kick.

It was effectively an away game for Liverpool, with the final being played at the Etihad Campus in front of a watching Pep Guardiola, whose first team lead Liverpool in the Premier League by a point with three games to play.

Hugo Lloris vs Liverpool: Mauricio Pochettino has one of the biggest decisions of his career to make this season

Hugo Lloris vs Liverpool: Mauricio Pochettino has one of the biggest decisions of his career to make this season

Another mistake from Hugo Lloris has led to calls for the Tottenham goalkeeper to be dropped. Here, @TalkingTHFC acknowledges manager Mauricio Pochettino has a big decision to make before the end of the season.

Here we are again.

Let’s start off by saying the 2-1 defeat at Anfield was no one single player’s fault. Scratch that, it was Hugo, definitely Hugo.

He won the World Cup last summer, but Spurs goalkeeper Lloris has been below par this season

4

He won the World Cup last summer, but Spurs goalkeeper Lloris has been below par this season

I feel like I find myself sitting here every few months saying the same thing, whether about the Spurs captain or another player.

Tottenham continue to be their own worst enemy. When I look back at the games we’ve lost this season, I can rarely say we’ve played badly. In fact, the game at Liverpool yesterday was one of our best displays for quite some time.

But the fact still remains that individual errors are our biggest downfall. Just this season alone, Michel Vorm made a double blunder in the return game against Liverpool, Kieran Trippier at Chelsea and so many more countless examples.

Vorm deputised for the injured Lloris in September and his mistakes saw Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino score

4

Vorm deputised for the injured Lloris in September and his mistakes saw Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino score

Even analysing our captain alone, only Everton keeper Jordan Pickford (9) has made more errors leading to goals in the Premier League since the 2016/17 season than Lloris (8), and most of those were at Sunderland. I mean, really?

The official line from Mauricio Pochettino continues to be that his players are punching well above their weight and continuing to learn. But where do we draw the line?

Spurs have the fourth highest average age of any squad in the top six this season. The suggestion that this is a young crop still learning just isn’t an argument. The hierarchy at the club just can’t make that excuse anymore I’m afraid.

We simply had to add to the squad over the last two windows, but for reasons we can’t explain, we haven’t. This summer, Tottenham need a huge overhaul of names, but the likelihood of that is slim to none. Investment is key in the Premier League, just ask Liverpool.

Returning to the dilemma at hand, what does Pochettino do about his goalkeeper conundrum?

Gazzaniga has impressed when called upon by Pochettino

4

Gazzaniga has impressed when called upon by Pochettino

Does he keep faith in World Cup-winning Lloris, does he finally give Paulo Gazzaniga an extended run, or does he dip into the market?

The Frenchman continues to be a frustration to fans. He proved away at Borussia Dortmund not three weeks ago he can be the difference when it really matters. But on Sunday he proved once again that he can be the exact opposite.

Hugo's howlers this season

A World Cup final gaffe has been followed by a number of high profile mistakes this season

3rd Oct 2018 – Lloris comes flying out to close down Jordi Alba despite having four defenders back. Fails to meet Alba, who passes to Coutinho for 1-0 after two minutes

24th Oct 2018 – Is sent off for a reckless challenge against PSV. Spurs draw 2-2, left with one point after three Champions League group games

13th Jan 2019 – Fails to stop Marcus Rashford’s tame effort across goal at his near post in the defeat to Man United

31st March 2019 – Is unable to catch a weak effort from Mohamed Salah leading to a Toby Alderweireld own goal

Gazzaniga has proven time and time again in a Spurs shirt he has what it takes to succeed as our number one. But the gaffer has put himself in this sticky situation by making Lloris captain. With the armband clamped to his arm and a World Cup medal around his neck, how could he possibly drop the Frenchman?

Well, Mauricio, it’s getting to a stage where you need to make that call. This could be a defining decision in his career, and one he absolutely must get right.

Nail it, and Spurs transform into a progressive team that can quickly counter thanks to the prowess of the Argentine’s kicking ability. Stick with Lloris, and the monthly mistake he makes may become a weekly occurrence.

The 26-year-old Oblak has been at Atletico since 2014 and become one of the game’s best

4

The 26-year-old Oblak has been at Atletico since 2014 and become one of the game’s best

But, there is a third option. Do Tottenham actually go out and sign a new first-choice goalkeeper?

It’s been seven years since the club last had to replace their number one, and some would argue the significant jumps made in stature since then could help to attract a player of an even higher calibre than Lloris.

I don’t want to sound dramatic, but I’d literally sell a kidney to get Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak on board.

But, I’m not the one in the driving seat. Mr Pochettino, now is the time to stick your neck out. Do you stick, or do you twist? This summer, we may actually find out.

Real Madrid are also believed to be interested in the tricky winger, who has bagged nine Bundesliga assists this season.
