Manchester City needed a hero against Leicester City on Monday night and boy did Vincent Kompany step up to the plate.
Knowing they had to win their penultimate Premier League fixture to regain control of the title race, City looked nervous and frustrated at times as they struggled to breach the visitors’ impressive defence at the Etihad Stadium.
WIth 20 minutes left on the clock and the scoreline still goalless it looked like it just may not be their night, and Liverpool would be heading into the final day sitting top of the table.
Step forward their long-serving skipper.
Little seemed on when the ball was played to Kompany in the middle of the Leicester City half, but the Belgian defender advanced forward before unleashing a stunning strike into the top corner of the net.
Given the magnitude of the occasion – not to mention the quality of the strike – it may well prove be the goal of the season and the one that seals back-to-back titles for City, as it proved enough to earn them a 1-0 victory.
City now just need to better Liverpool’s result on Sunday to clinch the crown. They face Brighton away, while Liverpool host Wolves at home.
Kompany’s moment of brilliance sparked plenty of reaction on Twitter, with many suggesting it proved the 33-year-old was the Premier League’s outstanding defender, not his Liverpool rival Virgil van Dijk, who has been lauded for his performances and leadership this season.
