Dedryck Boyata has left Celtic and signed for Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin.

The 28-year-old’s contract is up this summer and the defender has opted to move to Germany.

Boyata won four Scottish Premiership titles after joining Celtic from Manchester City in 2015.

Speaking about his move to the German club, he said: “The club is ambitious and has goals that I stand by.

“I was very impressed by how [Hertha general manager] Michael Preetz tried to talk to me and showed me a clear plan.”

Preetz added: “We’ve had Dedryck in our sights for some time now and are fully convinced of his qualities, and we are confident that he is a real reinforcement for our defence.”

Boyata fell out with former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers last summer after the club rejected a £9million bid from Premier League new boys Fulham.

After being banished from the first-team, he made a scoring return by netting the only goal against Hamilton last August.

The Belgium international’s last Celtic game came in a 2-1 win over arch rivals Rangers in March after a hamstring injury ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Boyata made 135 appearances for the Hoops.
