Manchester United news: Juan Mata blog post highlights mood around club after Champions League qualification failure

Juan Mata summed up the mood at Old Trafford in just seven words.

Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at relegated Huddersfield ended any hope fans had of watching Champions League football next season, as Chelsea and Tottenham took the remaining two places to join Manchester City and Liverpool.

And in his latest blog entry Mata kept it short, writing: “You deserve better. No more words needed.”

The 31-year-old is out of contract in the summer, but has been offered a new one-year extension, while it is being reported Brighton want to give him a deal.

Hi manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is hopeful he will stay.

“He’s a fantastic person and a fantastic player,” he said before the Huddersfield draw.

“It’s up to him. I’ve had words with him and he knows how highly I regard him.

“I was so pleased for him [scoring the goal against Chelsea] last week; it would have been so much nicer for him to sit there and talk about Juan scoring the winning goal against Chelsea.

“He’s a top pro and let’s see if they manage to agree.”

Solskjaer was critical of some of his other players after the draw, revealing a number are unlikely to play again.

“I can’t talk about individuals now but there’s a chance you’ve seen the last of [some] players,” he said. “We weren’t good enough . . . the table seldom lies.

“Effort and attitude was not the problem. The players were running and trying. We just weren’t good enough. That is the problem.”
