Juventus star Leonardo Bonucci insists he was ‘misunderstood’ over controversial comments about Moise Kean’s racial abuse

Leonardo Bonucci insists his comments concerning the racial abuse Juventus team-mate Moise Kean endured were ‘misunderstood’.

Cagliari fans directed monkey chants towards Kean in Juve’s 2-0 win on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old hit back by scoring his side’s second goal late on, before celebrating in front of the home supporters with his arms aloft.

In a post-match interview, Bonucci said Kean should not have celebrated the way he did and claimed the young striker was partly to blame for the abuse.

However, after being called out for his comments by Manchester City star Raheem Sterling – who was also racially abused while on international duty with England last month – Bonucci backtracked on his comments.

On Instagram, he said: “After 24 hours I want to clarify my feelings.

“Yesterday I was interviewed right at the end of the game, and my words have been clearly misunderstood, probably because I was too hasty in the way I expressed my thoughts.
