Louis van Gaal explains why he remains angry with Ed Woodward over Manchester United exit

Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has slammed Ed Woodward for contacting Jose Mourinho behind his back.

The Dutchman was sacked by the Red Devils in 2016 after a tumultuous two seasons at Old Trafford and replaced by Mourinho following months of speculation.

Van Gaal’s fate was eventually sealed just minutes after he delivered the 2016 FA Cup – which he describes as his greatest managerial achievement.

And the 67-year-old admits he remains angry with executive vice-chairman Woodward for the way his exit was handled.

“I can imagine Woodward chooses Mourinho,” Van Gaal told the BBC. “He is a top coach. He has won a lot of titles. More than me.

“What I don’t like is Woodward contacting my successor, knowing in his mind he will replace me and he keeps his mouth shut for six months.

“Every Friday I had to go into press conferences and be asked what I thought about the rumours. What does that do to the authority of the coach?

“To win the FA Cup when, for six months, the media has a noose round my neck, is my biggest achievement.

“I spoke to Woodward the day after that game. His argument was that I was only going to be there for one more year and Mourinho would be there for three, four or five.

“I appreciate he hired a private plane to get me back to Portugal but his arguments were not good enough.”

And Van Gaal, who recently announced his retirement, reveals he never wanted to sign a three-year contract in the first place.

Back in 2014, he was determined to end his career at Man United when he reached the age of 65, however the Glazers and Woodward insisted on an extra year.

He added: “The Glazers and Ed Woodward asked me. That is why I am still angry with the way they chose to do it.

“Ed Woodward knew Manchester United would be my last club.”
