Virgil van Dijk has reportedly been left ‘bemused’ by comments attributed to him following Liverpool’s defeat to Barcelona on Wednesday evening.
The Dutchman was quoted by Spanish publication Marca to have heaped praise on Lionel Messi after the Argentine dismantled his side at Camp Nou.
Messi scored a brace, including a stunning free-kick, and the Reds now have a mountain to climb ahead of Tuesday’s second leg at Anfield
“When he is at his best, there is nothing you can do to stop him,â€Â Van Dijk was quoted as saying.
“I am glad I don’t play in Spain and have to face him every season.â€
The comments were picked up by the English media but according to the Liverpool Echo, Van Dijk has dismissed them as ‘fake news’, insisting he did not say those words.

The report also states Liverpool are equally frustrated at the quotes and have been left ‘perplexed’ by the Madrid-based outlet.
Meanwhile, Liverpool travel to Newcastle on Saturday evening in the last of Saturday’s Premier League action.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will be desperate for a win to keep the pressure on league leaders Manchester City.
However, Rafael Benitez has insisted his side will not roll over for Liverpool ahead of the match.
“We are professional and have to do our job,†said Benitez.
“My relationship with the city of Liverpool, the club and the fans is there.
“At the same time, I have been to play Liverpool with Chelsea, with Newcastle, and we have to do our job.â€
