Czech international Josef Sural dies after minibus carrying Alanyaspor players crashes, team-mate Steven Caulker ‘badly shaken up’

The fatal minibus crash which tragically killed Czech international footballer Josef Sural has left his Aytemiz Alanyaspor team-mate Steven Caulker ‘badly shaken up’.

Seven Alanyaspor players were making their way back from the club’s 1-1 draw against Kayserispor in a private bus on Sunday when it veered off the road around five kilometres (3.1 miles) from the coastal town of Alanya.

Sural, 28, was rushed to hospital following the crash but died from his injuries.

The six other players travelling on the bus included former Tottenham, Liverpool and QPR defender Caulker and ex-Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse.

They were also taken to hospital but escaped serious injury along with their other teammates on board – Djalma Campos, Baiano, Welinton and Isaac Sackey.

Caulker was treated at the Alanya Private Anatolian Hospital, and the player’s representatives told The Mirror he is ‘safe, but badly shaken up’.

The rest of the Alanyaspor squad and staff had returned on the official team coach or made their way home on their own.

Club Chairman Hasan Cavusoglu has claimed the driver fell asleep behind the wheel, while a second driver was also alleged to have been asleep. An investigation has been launched.

“According to information I received from our police chief, despite there being two drivers on the vehicle, they were both asleep. The crash happened as a result of them both being asleep,” Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency quoted Cavusoglu as saying.

Sural, a striker, won 20 caps for the Czech Republic national team and was part of their squad at Euro 2016.

He had only moved to Turkey in January, joining the Super Lig club from Slavia Prague.

Sural leaves behind a wife and two children, the youngest of whom was only born two months ago.

His former club Slavia Prague paid their respects to Sural on social media.

A post from the club on Twitter read: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of our friend and former captain Josef Å ural. We would like to express our condolences to his family.

“Å ury, we will never forget you. Rest in peace!”

Arsenal goalkeeper and former international team-mate Petr Cech also posted his condolences, writing on Twitter: “Sad news from this morning. Sincere condolences to the family and to all the loved ones. R.i.p.”
