John Hartson believes Brendan Rodgers ‘let the Celtic family down’ by leaving the Scottish club for Leicester City.

Rodgers quit as Hoops boss in February after two-and-a-half years north of the border.

He enjoyed remarkable success with the Hoops by winning back-to-back trebles of Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.

The club were on for an historic treble treble this season, but Rodgers gave that up to instead return to English football as Leicester manager, succeeding Claude Puel.

Speaking at the launch of this year’s BT Sport Pub Cup, Hartson told talkSPORT.com: “I thought the timing was wrong from Brendan.

“I think the Celtic fans would have appreciated if he’d have said he was leaving at the end of the season but stuck around for the potential treble treble.

“I know he brought incredible success before he left but I just think it was the way it happened.

“If Leicester wanted their man, they would have waited. If he’d have said he had a job to do and he’d not finished what he’d done at Celtic then I think the fans would have understood.”

Hartson scored 109 goals in 201 games for Celtic during a five-season spell with the club.

He won three Scottish Premiership titles and was a popular figure with the fans.

The 43-year-old felt just as let down by Rodgers’ decision to leave as the rest of the Celtic Park faithful.

Hartson continued: “It was the way it happened so quickly and the way that he portrayed that he was possibly going to stay to take Celtic onto the next level in Europe.

“Everybody believed in him, including myself. I was telling every man and his dog that Brendan was here for the ten in a row.

“Brendan would tell you he didn’t have much time to mull over things.

“Leicester wanted him straight away, he’s gone on to massive amounts of money, he’s back in the Premier League.

“He will have his own reasons for that and he’s entitled to have them. He’s let a lot of the Celtic family down.

“In terms of myself – I’m like all of the others – I feel that he could have stayed and seen out the job.”
