Champions League: Tottenham and Manchester City played out a thriller but what other knockout games have excited fans?

In one of the most dramatic nights of Champions League football ever seen, Tottenham over came Manchester City on away goals to reach the semi-final for first time ever, where they will take on Ajax.

The famous competition has witnessed many classic contests in its illustrious history, but very few can match the action that unfolded at the Etihad on Wednesday.

Llorente scored the crucial goal to send Spurs through

Llorente scored the crucial goal to send Spurs through

Seven goals, four of them coming in the first 11 minutes and two decisions made by VAR, first to allow a goal from Fernando Llorente, which would prove decisive, while Raheem Sterling thought he had completed his hat-trick, but his effort was ruled out after Sergio Aguero had strayed offside, capped an incredible game of football.

But what other knockout matches have been able to create a similar spectacle?

Monaco 3-1 Real Madrid 2003/04 quarter-final (5-5 on aggregate – Monaco win on away goals)

Having led after winning 4-2 at the Bernaebu, Raul extended the visitors advantage with a superb strike and Real Madrid looked set for a straightforward night.

However, Monaco did not read the script and set about pushing for a response, which came on the stroke of half-time through Ludovic Guily and three minutes after the break, on-loan Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes headed in.

Guily then added a second.

Despite featuring a side that had the likes of Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo, Real Madrid failed to mount a comeback, as Monaco went on to face Chelsea in the last four.

Deportivo 4-0 AC Milan 2003/04 quarter-final (Deportivo win 5-4 on aggregate)

Holders Milan thumped Deportivo 4-0 in the first-leg and seemingly had one foot in the semi-final, given no team had ever managed to overturn a three-goal deficit in the competition’s history.

Walter Pandiani, Juan Carlos Valeron and Albert Luque gave Deportivo a 3-0 half-time lead and Fran netted the all-important goal to send Kaka and co packing and complete a comeback of herculean proportions.

Chelsea 4-2 Barcelona Round of 16 2004/05 (Chelsea win 5-4 on aggregate)

After a 2-1 first-leg defeat at the Nou Camp, where Chelsea had Didier Drogba sent off, the Blues were expected to struggle in the return leg, but instead turned in one of the best displays of counter-attacking football ever seen.

Goals from Eidur Gudjohnsen, Frank Lampard and Damien Duff made it 3-0 with only 20 minutes played, but Ronaldinho scored from the penalty spot, before an audacious toe poke finish gave him his second.

John Terry sends Chelsea through

With Barcelona now in the lead courtesy of away goals, Chelsea rallied and a header from John Terry turned the tie back in their favour and wild scenes ensued come full-time.

Chelsea 4-4 Liverpool quarter-final 2008/09 (Chelsea win 7-5 on aggregate)

The two sides had battled it out in this competition numerous times over the years and the season before played out a classic five-goal thriller that many thought would be hard to top, Well, they did just that.

Chelsea led 3-1 from the first-leg at Anfield, but Liverpool got themselves level through a Fabio Aurelio free-kick and Xabi Alonso penalty.

Frank Lampard netted twice against Liverpool

Didier Drogba struck, then Alex thundered in a free-kick, while Frank Lampard netted his first of the evening.

The Reds scored twice as Liverpool looked to be heading through, but Lampard was Chelsea’s saviour once more to set up a showdown with familiar foe Barcelona.

Juventus 2-3 Manchester United semi-final 1998/99 (Manchester United win 4-3 on aggregate)

The final will always be remembered as one of the greatest comebacks ever and so it should, but the match that took them there, is also one of the best and demonstrated perfectly the fight and heart Sir Alex Ferguson’s side had at that time.

And no player embodied that quite like Roy Keane, who produced one of his most selfless, inspired performances in a United shirt.

Filippo Inzaghi had given Juventus a 2-0, but then the United captain got himself booked meaning he would miss the final, scored a header to pull one back and then played a crucial role in Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole getting among the goals and the rest as they say is history.

Barcelona 6-1 PSG Round of 16 2016/17 (Barcelona win 6-5 on aggregate)

It was shocking enough to see Barcelona had lost the first-leg 4-0 and the disbelief did not end there, as they became the first side to overturn such a setback and reach the quarter-finals for a 10th consecutive season. Luis Suarez scored in the third minute, before Layvin Kurzawa’s own goal and Lionel Messi’s penalty gave Barcelona hope.

Neymar nets to pull Barcelona level

Edison Cavani netted for the French side and it was 5-3 in the 88th minute, but Neymar curled in a superb free-kick, converted from the spot and then turned provider for Sergi Roberto to poke in, as the Nou Camp went wild.
